Indices

Here you can see various stock indices from around the world. The index weighs the development for several shares and can thus be used as a comparative figure. An index is always measured in relation to a start day. The start day often has a value of 100 and then shows the development since then of the stocks that are below the index.

There are different indices depending on which stock market you want to measure. The largest index in Sweden is called OMXSPI and measures the share price on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

There are several indices where both measure the stock price. When looking at the index, you can keep an eye on the letters GI and PI. It determines whether the index is a price index or a return index (gross index).

PI (price index) only measures how stock prices develop on the stock exchange.

The GI (gross index), also called the return index, also measures how stock prices develop, but also counts all the dividends that companies make.

If you take the Stockholm Stock Exchange as an example, OMXSPI (price index) measures prices and developments on the stock exchange.

OMXSGI (return index) measures both the development in share prices and any share dividends that companies provide, which gives a clearer picture.

As I said, there are different stock indices for different stock exchanges around the world. In Finland, the OMX Helsinki 25 is a popular index. Other important indices in the Nordic region are OMX Copenhagen 20 for Denmark and OSEXBX Oslo for Norway.

Other major world stock indices are DJ USA, Dow Jones, NASDAQ, (USA), DJ Canada, (Canada) Hang Seng, (Hong Kong) and Nikkei (Japan), which include the 225 largest stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

There are also other indices on the stock market in Europe such as DAX, DJ France and DJ UK.
